Richard Ozero didn’t plan on becoming a commercial beekeeper. In fact, you could say he stumbled into a business by accident.

Richard grew up on a farm with generations of farmers behind him, but farming wasn’t part of his original game plan. After an exciting move to the city and a career in television news, he found himself missing something. Reconnecting with nature and working the land again filled a void he hadn’t even realized was there.

So, Richard and his wife, Amber, decided to buy land and start their own farm. Honeybees seemed like a great addition to their livestock, and together the couple took the plunge headfirst, purchasing 920 hives from a retiring beekeeper. Just like that, Good Morning Honey was born and Richard now has over 15 years of experience under his belt. Richard hopes more people will recognize the incredible scale of Alberta’s honey industry. Commercial beekeeping is a full-time career, with extensive operations and hard work behind every container of locally produced honey.

Being part of the Bee Maid Honey co-operative has made that journey even more rewarding. Richard values the family-like community and the opportunity to contribute to a Canadian brand with a 70-year legacy of quality honey. He takes pride in playing a small part in that story while helping support Canadian honey production every day. What he finds  most rewarding is knowing that the honey his apiary produces helps provide the food Canadians enjoy every day. From television news to lush fields, Richard’s journey may not have gone according to plan, but it’s certainly turned into a pretty sweet career!
